[00:00:00] Welcome back, everybody, to your second favorite film podcast. My name is Bradley, coming to you live from Vancouver, Canada, and I will be your host this evening. Last night, everybody's favorite awards ceremony that they definitely pay attention to. The Golden Globes happened, and wouldn't you know it, at this awards ceremony, they gave out some awards to films and people who are in films and people who made films. And since this is a film podcast and I have nothing better to do with my time, why don't we take an hour and discuss these awards? Before we get started, I feel obligated to put out a disclaimer. This shit doesn't matter, and it's not about us. I know how award ceremonies can be. I know how award season can be. You watched your movies. You have the movies you like, you have the movies you don't. You have the performances you like. You have the things you want to win, and sometimes those things don't win. All of this is subjective, all right? All of this is up to other people's opinions, so we can all have disagreements. All right? So if the. The Golden Globes did not go your way yesterday and you've been, like, angry about it all day, I. I don't know if it matters that much. So I have my stuff that I want to win, but I'm not letting any of this, like, make me mad or sad or happy or excited. I'm just like a dude with a microphone who, like, got up and went to work this morning. You're just a person with some AirPods who's listening to me ramble about movies. None of this, like, actually matters or affects our lives. So if you feel like your life has been affected by the Golden Globes, let's take a deep breath, let's calm down a little bit, and let's hop back into the podcast once that's complete. So assuming now you are in a good mental state to approach the discussion of the Golden Globes with me, here's how this is going to work. I've gone to the Golden Globes website, and we're going to go in reverse order for all of the film awards. We're not going to do the TV awards today. Why? Because this is a film podcast and because I'm not watching that much tv. Are you crazy? That's insane. So we're going to talk about the film awards today. Apologies if you have opinions about the TV awards as well. We're going to start from the bottom. We're going to work our way to the top in whatever order. The Golden Globes website has for us. And you might be asking yourself, well Bradley, why are you using the Golden Globes website? Did you not watch the telecast? I sure did not watch the telecast. We only have you, me, everyone a finite amount of hours on this earth and you, me and everyone find great ways to waste them. I simply will not be wasting my my time on this planet watching the Golden Globes ceremony when they will just pray list of the awards for me. I heard that the host was quite good, that the jokes were a little bit funny and there was a lot of like poly market betting ads throughout the whole thing and that there were two commentators in between winners that were a little weird. I I have something for you here. Here's the ne if you want to place a poly market bet from yesterday's ceremony because the advertising worked on you, place a bet about whether I'm gonna watch the 2027 Golden Globes Awards ceremony. That'll be easy money. I am however, in invested in the winners because I did watch all of these movies and I do have opinions about them. So we're just going to go through the winners and the nominees and just kind of chat about them for the next hour. It's in the description of the podcast Van bradley on film gmail.com. i'd like to hear your defense of the Golden Globe ceremony, but we're going to start with some cinematic and box office achievement. Now it seems that this was the award that caused the most controversy yesterday and it's usually the one that causes the most controversy. It's a new award award. I want to say it's in its third or fourth year since the Golden Globes has introduced it and previous winners. It kind of feels like the second Banana Award. Like you weren't good enough to win all of the other cool kid awards, but people liked your movie. So we're gonna give you the cinematic and box office achievement, whatever that means. Your nominees this year are Avatar fire and Ash, F1K Pop, Demon Hunters, Mission Impossible, the Final Reckoning, Sinners, Weapons, Wicked for Good and Zootopia 2. With the possible omission of Mission Impossible, the Final Reckoning, which I think is just flatly not a very good movie. This is a pretty good suite of nominees here for this award. Now the winner of this award was Sinners and this is where the controversy came in not because it won, but because. But because this was the only award that it won. So firstly, this is the movie I would have picked. This is my favorite winner for this. Out of all the nominees. This would have been my favorite. So I'm really happy Sinners won. And I'm going to defend this award and the Sinners win because I think that this achieved exactly what they're hoping to achieve. Same when Wicked won and same when Barbie won. I think this award is actually functioning exactly as it should be, and people are just misunderstanding what the point is. So with this award, we're trying to find ways to award movies that people watched and people liked, but that are not going to win all of the other awards. So if this award didn't exist, Sinners would have won zero awards. Now, I've heard a lot of commentary that it should have won other awards, but I don't think there's like an egregious win in any of the other categories. And so it's like, I don't know where it would have won. Like, I don't think Michael B. Jordan should have won. I don't think the screenplay should have won. The way it's kind of set up at the Golden Globes, I just don't think it should have won the other awards. So assuming I don't think Sinners was the best pick for any of the other awards, it just would have won none. So now this award, same with Barbie, same with Wicked. Those are movies that would have won none, right? Or none of the big ones. You know, maybe Ariana Grande might have snuck in for Wicked, but it's like, it's not going to win many of the other awards. So this is where we're going to honor it, right? So you have a movie like Sinners, which I don't think is going to win or should win any of the other awards, but was my favorite time at the movies last year. This was a movie that came out early in the year I went to see at a fucking great time. I then went to two separate people, one of them my friend, and one of them was like one of the first dates I went on with my new girlfriend at the time, right? So we was like, hey, do you want to go to the cinema? What should we see? Sinners was still in the cinema. I'd already seen it. And my pitch was, you know, you might like Sinners, you might not like Sinners, but it's a fantastic film. And more importantly, it's just a really fucking good time at the movies, right? So if we're trying to honor, like, for me, cinematic and box office achievement, this was a huge cinematic achievement. Sinners was a big cinematic achievement. It was my favorite experience at the movies. Last year was the best time I had at the movies. It was the movie I dragged the most people to because I wanted them to watch it in a theater. It's probably the movie like worst watched on an iPhone compared to.
[00:06:32] Compared to the cinema experience. So I think that this award, the cinematic achievement award going to Sinners makes perfect sense and is the exact award I would have given it. And the exact award, I think it like, deserves to win over a lot of the other awards. Now I think the problem is none of the. None of the movies that have ever won this award have ever won the other award. So it kind of feels like the second Banana Award. But even if that's true, I still think this is like a worthy winner. And I'm glad it got like, honored for being a cinematic achievement. And I think it also leaves out the other big films that did win awards that were also cinematic or box office achievements. Like one battle after another is going to win a lot of awards and was also a huge cinematic achievement. And so I understand why there's a little bit of like, oh, they're only putting the movies in here that already aren't going to win the other awards. But like, this is a good list of nominees. Avatar Fire and Ash is like a good movie. It's completely fine. F1 is a good movie and is also like a huge cinematic achievement. K Pop Demon Hunters, obviously Mission Impossible, like it or not, has two amazing sequences. Definitely a cinematic achievement in that regard. Weapons is definitely a cinematic achievement. Just such a great horror movie. Just, yeah, really, really great. Wicked for good and Zootopia 2. Obviously huge achievements, cinematic and box office. Like, I just think this award makes sense. I'm glad that it exists. I'm glad Sinners won it. I know there was a lot of like, hubbub to today, but how it was like insulting that Sinners won. I'm like, well, that's kind of just on all the people who did win, who are all worthy winners. I don't know. I just think that this is a good win for Sinners. This is the award I would have given it. I'm glad it won this. We're moving on. Next up, we have Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. We have Dream as One from Avatar. Fire and Ash golden from K Pop Demon Hunters. I Lied to you from Sinners. No Place like Home from Wicked For Good, the the Girl in the Bubble from Wicked for Good and Train Dreams from Train Dreams. My beloved Train Dreams with an original song nod which is amazing. Golden from K Pop Demon Hunters is the winner here. It's the worthy winner. It's the one that I would have picked to win. It's just the song of the year outside of like the best song in a movie just really is the song of the year. I love golden. Really this whole thing, like let's just say if, if each of the other nominees was a different song from K Pop Demon Hunters, I think the category still makes sense. So I'm happy. Golden one super worthy winner in a year where all of those other songs are good. Like I, I can remember when I was like listening to them either in the film or in the soundtrack or in the credits. Like I, I know all of those songs. Golden is definitely the best song of this bunch in a year that I think was weaker overall for original songs in, in films. And so yeah, golden, great winner. Happy at one. Really good for K Pop Demon Hunters to get some recognition here. Just a real phenomenon, not the world's best movie, but certainly not a bad movie. And I just think, and we want to encourage films like K Pop Demon Hunters, which are widely seen by a younger generation who we want to be like into movies. We want to see them winning the awards they, they deserve to win. We want people to be interested in that kind of thing. And having big movies like K Pop Demon Hunters winning awards deservingly is really, really good for, for movies and for the industry and for keeping people interested. And so this is just a great win and all around. Next up we have Best Original Score. We have Alexander Displat.
[00:09:56] I can't even fucking say that properly anyways, Frankenstein, Hans Zimmer from F1. It's really hard, it's really hard not to put Hans Zimmer in this category for whatever he does. Johnny Greenwood from One Battle After Another, Kang Ding Ray from Seurat, Ludwig Goranson from Sinners and Mac Max Richter from Hamnet. Now unfortunately I've yet to see Seurat. There just has not been a screening in Vancouver that I've been able to get to yet, which is unfortunate. However, both the or the F1 score, the one Battle After Another score, the Sinner score and the Hamnet score I all like very, very much. I've listened to all of those scores on Spotify at least once or twice now. I'm having a good time with all of them. The Frankenstein score was not memorable to me. When I watched the movie. I wouldn't have even occurred to me to go and look for the Frankenstein score. I'm surprised people like Frankenstein as much as they do. It did not really work that well for me, although there were some highlights. However, happy for Alexander Deplot that he got this nomination. Our winner, though, for Sinners. Like, what the are these people talking about? This is another worthy win for Sinners. Ludwig Goranson is always amazing every time. It's the same with Hans Zimmer, really, at this point. Like, every time he puts a. He puts out a score in a film, you know it's going to be a certified banger. Sinner's obviously another very worthy win in the. In the best original score. I. I don't know what I would have put here if I had just kind of. I hadn't really thought about who. I probably would have picked Max Richter for Hamnet. Hamnet was the score that stood out to me the most in this bunch. Watching the movie and I think would be my pick over Sinners. But honestly, Sinners is such a worthy winner here. That score is fantastic.
[00:11:32] Not only is the score fantastic, but it perfectly complements all of the music that's being used, like all of the songs that are used in the film as well. Um, so, yeah, I just think Ludwig Gordon's an always amazing. This is a worthy win for Sinners. Tough luck for the Sinners didn't win another award crowd. This is another really worthy win for them. I will say, though, I heard that this award was not shown on the telecast and, like, the best podcast award or whatever was. I think if we're going to do an awards ceremony, the awards should be in the ceremony. And I'm sure there was some dumb bit or some dumb joke or whatever. We. We probably could have cut out to make sure that all the people winning awards are recognized, but hey, I don't produce these things. I don't fucking know what's going on. But yeah, Sinners. Ludwig Gordon wins best original score. Good for you. Worthy win. Happy Sinners won this. We're moving on. Next up, we have Best Screenplay. We have Chloe Zhao and Maggie o' Farrell for Hamnet. We have Jafar Panahi for It Was Just An Accident. We have Joachim Trier and Eskil Vought for Sentimental Value. I don't know if I'm pronouncing that. I know I'm pronouncing Joachim Trier correctly. I'm not sure about Eskil. Sorry, Ezkiel. If you're listening and I messed up your last name. We have Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another. We have Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie from Marty supreme. And we have Ryan Coogler for Sinners. There are obviously some really, really great screenplays here, though. The one I think is I just, you know, I have such a soft spot for Sorry Baby and just everything that film achieved. I think Sorry Baby just had such a sensational screenplay that I'm a little bit sad it missed it. It was like that year when Past Lives Now Past Life sometimes got into the screenplay noms at one ceremony or another. But I just remember watching that film that year and going, this just has such a sensational screenplay in a film that's probably not going to win many other awards. And that's how I feel about Sorry Baby as well. That I just like, I've watched it twice now in the cinema and both times, like, this screenplay is just sensational from Eva Victor.
[00:13:22] You know, I, I would have loved to see it here. I obviously wouldn't have picked it as my winner. Paul Thomas Anderson wins for One Battle After Another. And this would have been my pick as well.
[00:13:31] Going into the year, I would have said Hamnet, the score screenplay would have been my favorite screenplay or had the best chance to be my favorite. It's one of my favorite novels of all time. I really like Maggie o'. Farrell's. Just like her. Her kind of prose and the way she writes her novels. I think Hamnet is her most successful book and I also think her working with Chloe Zhao on Hamnet would have had the highest chance. But Paul Thomas Anderson's a close second. I, I'm just a really huge fan, as are most people who watch movies. I mean, his movies are, are sensational and he's long overdue for these awards. And not only is he long overdue, but One Battle After Another is a worthy winner. I, I think this is the. The best screenplay of the bunch here. One of the things I enjoyed most about Sentimental Value is the screenplay. It's not a film that I enjoyed as much as the people who love it the most, but it's a film with a sensational screenplay. I think Marty supreme and Sinners obviously films with. With good screenplays as well. And then, yeah, it was just. This is a really great group of nominees. It Was Just An Accident is another film that I would say had an excellent screenplay I thought was really, really good. But yeah, my pick is One Battle After Another.
[00:14:32] I think the way this movie just transitions into it. It's kind of two parts, the first 40 minutes and then the rest of the film. But I think there's, there's a, there's a third act. It's a real, it's a real like, you know, typical storytelling, like a three act play kind of deal. I think the way that this screenplay kind of just takes you through all three acts of this film is really, really sensational. And I, I just have so much love for One Battle After Another and, and think Paul Thomas Anderson in general is such a worthy winner for such a worthy film. And so really, really glad that that PTA and One Battle After Another picked up the best screenplay. This is another one though, where it's like, I'm going to keep mentioning this because this was the discourse and I'm kind of just responding to that. It's like, okay, you're mad that Sinners won the, the best, you know, cinematic achievement in box office award, which is a little bit stupid, but you know, I'm defending it and saying it makes sense, right? But it's like, okay, so we're mad. So like let's go through the other awards Sinners was nominated for, right? Like Paul Thomas Anderson and one bad left or another. That just is to me a better screenplay. Like, it's like Sinners was robbed here. It's not like Sinners clearly had the best screenplay of the bunch and then they just picked something else because they hate sinners or whatever. Like, I think One Battle After Another has a stronger screenplay and I think Sinner's third act lets it down from two sensational acts. Like the first and the second act are just truly sensational. I think the third act, if it lets it down at all, that's where it is. And I, and I just think that PTA for One Battle After Another is, is so, so good.
[00:16:01] I don't know. I just don't know where Sinners. I don't know where these imaginary wins Sinners was going to get were coming from because I think One Battle After Another does have a superior screenplay. So that's the winner. Here we are, moving on. Best director in a Motion Picture. Chloe Zhao for Hamnet, Guillermo del Toro for Frankenstein. Jafar Panahi for It Was Just An Accident, Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value. Paul. Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another and Ryan Coogler for Sinners. Now the one standout here for me is Guillermo del Toro for Frankenstein. I get that. We love Guillermo. I get that he's amazing. He makes some awesome Films I do not understand for the life of me, the love for Frankenstein. It's a perfectly fine movie. But if I was listing my. This is another area where it's like, where's Eva Victor? Like, there are so many other movies this year that I think were directed better than Guillermo. Like, I think that the quality of directing from Chloe Zhao Jafar, from Panahi, Joachim Trier, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, those five are movies in which I notice how great the directing is, where I'm like, oh my God, this director is really putting their magic touch on the film here. Like, I can really feel it as I'm watching it. Frankenstein at no point, at no point was like, oh man, Guillermo really cooked with this one. Like, I just don't understand.
[00:17:23] There are so many directors, directors this year that I think, you know, would have, would have been a better choice to, to nominate over Frankenstein. But otherwise I think this is a really good suite of, of of nominees here. Paul Thomas Anderson wins for One Battle After Another. Now this one's really hard to quantify. This also would have been my pick, I think. I think the direction of One Battle After Another is just off the charts. I think it's amazing. Paul Thomas Anderson, he's someone who's just always bringing his A game and it's interesting for him because I think all his films are amazing.
[00:17:53] But I think Licorice Pizza, which was his film prior to One Battle After Another, is the weakest of the bunch for a little while. Like Phantom Threat is the one before that and that's a masterpiece. That's one of my favorite films of all time. So I think he kind of dips a little bit with Licorice Pizza. Again, a very good film, a very watchable film, a very PTA film. But then he comes back and I'm not even sure I knew he could direct this kind of film. Like, like One Battle After Another. Certainly the biggest, most expansive, most like Hollywood style movie, especially something like Licorice Pizza only has a handful of characters and like a couple of locations. Phantom Thread, a handful of characters in a couple of locations. And then One Battle after another comes along and it's just so expansive and there's so many characters and there's so many different locations and it's such a sprawling story and it's just directed so well.
[00:18:44] There are so many sequences that I love so much. Like even just the direction and the way the camera's placed in the dojo when Leonardo DiCaprio's like crawling around or the, the Direction for the car chase sequences.
[00:18:57] That's my favorite bit of directing for the entire year. Probably it was that car chase sequence at the end of one battle after another. I do want to call out here. I. I really do think Sentimental Value is really acutely directed. Like, it's very precise in a way that I think really serves the story. And Joachim Trier is always great. I think my favorite sequence, like my favorite 30 second like sequence in a movie this year might have been and it was just an accident. I think Jafar Panahi is such a good.
[00:19:24] I like just such a great idea for how he wanted to end that film. And it was certainly the most successful ending to a film that I've seen in a really long time. And so I want to call out the other nominees here that I think did a really good job. Hamnet is very well directed and I think is especially that end sequence when they're at the, the theater and you know, Jesse Buckley's character is kind of seeing the play Hamlet and seeing the, the person kind of act as the character based on her, her deceased son, Hamnet. I. I just think that whole sequence from Chloe Zhao is so sensational. And then Ryan Coogler for Sinners is incredible. That movie is very well directed. I think this is just another one though where it's like, if Ryan Coogler had won this, you'd be like, okay, that makes sense. But. But if I'm picking who, who did I think did the best job directing their film this year, then I'm gonna have to go with pta. So it's just another one where it's like, yeah, I understand that we wanted Sinners to win more awards. I just don't know where those awards were, if they existed. Because I think PTA is a very worthy winner here. And I probably would have had both Joachim Trier and Jafar Panahi before Ryan Coogler. And then Ryan Coogler and Chloe Zhao probably tied at the end. I'm just not sure exactly. But yeah, PTA wins. I'm very happy about it.
[00:20:40] I just think he's a really worthy winner. It's a very worthy film. I think it's directed exceptionally. So, yeah, PTA wins. We are moving on. Now it's time for really the only award in the evening that truly surprised me. When I was looking through the list of winners, I was like, holy shit, I did not see that coming. Best performance by a male actor in a supporting role in a Motion picture. Your nominees are. Adam Sandler for J. Kelly Benicio Del Toro for One Battle After Another. Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein, Paul Mescal for Hamnet, Sean Penn for One Battle After Another, and Stellan Skarsgard for Sentimental Value. Now, I should have probably mentioned this at the beginning, but the Golden Globes are kind of nominated and voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I don't know who those people are. I don't know what they like. It's the whole. The whole thing's a bit fucking weird to me, if I'm being honest. And so I have no idea what their sensibilities are. For something to be a surprise or not be a surprise, this could be a group of five people or 500 people. I'd be like, yep, sure is. But I don't think they're an American group. I think they're a foreign press group, obviously. So I'm not sure what composition of people are voting on the Golden Globes. However, that might add some context to this winner here. But Stellan Skarsgard wins for Sentimental Value. Now I will say a very worthy winner. Stellan Skarsgrd is incredible. Not in Sentimental Value, but actually he's great in everything he's ever done. He's in a million different things. He's amazing in all of it. My favorite performance of his is in the TV miniseries Chernobyl. He plays Boris Shcherbina, which is just a character. And that's one of my favorite performances in anything of all time. So I'm super glad to see Stellan Skarsgrd kind of pick up awards. I think his performance and sentimental Value is great. It's certainly like a worthy winner at an awards ceremony. So I don't wanna take that, but it was far from my favorite supporting performance. I thought he was great in a movie that needed them to be great, but I don't think he was, like, transcendent in the way I think. I think Benicio Del Toro and Sean Pan, in one battle after another, both gave better supporting performances. And this is all subjective. Right. Like, we're trying to. If we're trying to figure out what the best is, then you kind of have to rank them, like, who did better than who, and. Right. And that's just hard because these are all very different performances.
[00:22:56] But I would have said either Sean Penn or Benicio, I think, were better, and I would have picked Sean Penn. This would have been my winner. If it was up to. If it's up to Bradley from Vancouver, who was going to be the best supporting actor? I think Sean Penn in one Battle after another was just insane. That performance, that's a transcendent performance for me. Jacob Elordi is really good in Frankenstein. This was the highlight for me, if I'm talking about things I liked about Frankenstein. Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, I think was this the biggest standout for that film? And really the only thing I found truly redeeming about it was Jacob Elordi. So I have no problem with him being nominated here. That's great. Adam Sandler and J. Kelly is great. It just really sucks for the Sandman because Uncut Gems was the one that got away from him. And I think that was a bit silly that he wasn't more recognized for that award. And so I don't think he was ever going to win for J. Kelly. But I kind of just rue the missed opportunities with Uncut Gems because I think that was the chance there. And then Paul Mescal, one of my favorite actors, I, I loved him so much. I'm so glad he's getting these nominations. I was so happy when he got the Oscar nod for After Sun. That was one of my favorite films of that year. And it's, it's the film that sticks with me most from that whole kind of several year period in the, in the early 2000s there. I just. After sun continues to blow me away. I think Paul Mescal is great in Hamnet. I again, I don't think you should have won this award. I would have gone with Sean Pennsylvania, but still In Skarsgard is a worthy winner. His performance and sentimental value is very reserved. And I wonder if that is why I didn't respond to it is because it's undeniably a great performance. Right? And it's hard to quantify what is the best performance.
[00:24:37] Right. Like if you are given an easy job and you do it really well, you often get less plaudits than if you were given a hard job that you did really well. But it's the best performance overall. It's not the best performance in a role that was difficult. Not to say that Stellan Skarsgard role was difficult. It's just, I think we have these inherent biases when it comes to these performances that bigger showy performances like Sean Penn's that I'm responding to that requires like a complete change of character. A complete, like, reframing of your whole entire. Your walk, your talk, what you're wearing, how you're, how you're emoting, how you're interacting. Like when you have to transform yourself, like Sean Penn did. It's often easier to notice. And so maybe that's my bias there. But still, in Skarsgrd did such a great job in Sentimental Value of portraying this father figure that is kind of disconnected from his daughters and it's his fault, but he wants to be more connected. But he also is, like, kind of trying to. He doesn't quite understand the issue and he's trying to, like, get his movie made, and he wants his daughters to be a part of that experience.
[00:25:41] And it just feels like he. He.
[00:25:44] It just feels like he perfectly encapsulates that role. Right. And so, again, a very, very deserving winner. If you have not watched Sentimental Value and you have the chance to catch it, I would absolutely go do it. It's a movie that I really, really loved. Not as much as the people who loved it most, but that I thought was really great. And. And Stellan Skarsgard is really great in it, so really happy he won this award. Wouldn't have been my pick. I would have gone with Sean Penn here, but I wouldn't have put Stellan much farther down the list than that. We are now moving on to best performance by a female actor in a supporting role. Your nominees are Amy Madigan for Weapons, which just firstly, truly inspired pick here. I think she's picking up some momentum this award season. Awesome. For Amy Madigan, we have Ariana Grande for Wicked for Good, L. Fanning for Sentimental Value, Emily Blunt for the Smashing Machine, Inga ips daughter Lilius for Sentimental Value, and Tiana Taylor for One Battle After Another. Tiana Taylor wins this for One Battle After Another. And you have to wonder, I mean, we kind of knew going into the award season that One Battle After Another would be kind of an unstoppable force, and it's just kind of whether it hit an immovable object anywhere. Teyana Taylor in the first 40 to 45 minutes of one Battle After Another is really great, is really, really good, and just brings so much life and energy to the film and really sets the tone for what the film is going to be. And I think more importantly, that performance is so memorable throughout the entire film.
[00:27:15] What Tiana Taylor's character does at the beginning of the film reverberates and sends an impact shock wave through the rest of the film. And even though we kind of jump ahead in time, the actions that this character took and the impression that they made on the film for that first 40 or 45 minutes, I'm really happy Teyana Taylor picked up this award. It's A very worthy win. It would not have been my pick.
[00:27:37] My pick would have been Inga Ipsdotter Lilias for Sentimental Value.
[00:27:41] I don't know why I responded to that performance so much. I remember leaving that movie and I was listening to another film podcast and they were saying, oh, if Sentimental Value gets any, you know, nominations, it's likely that the, the supporting actress nomination would go to Elle Fanning just because of the Elle Fanning of it all. And Elle Fanning was also in Predator this year and is more famous and has more exposure, etc. Etc. And Elle Fanning is good sentimental value and I think does a great job in the role she's given. But I remember at the time thinking, because I didn't know the actress's name, right, this is a Norwegian film. It's a Norwegian. I was familiar with Stellan Skarsgard and Rene or yeah, Rene Wrightsville. How do you say her last name? It'll be because she'll be nominated later. So Rene writes rights Eve. I can't remember exactly how to say her last name. I was familiar with her. I was familiar with Elfanning, obviously, but Inga Ipsdotter Lilias was the only one that I wasn't familiar with. And I remember thinking, oh, that's interesting because I think the best performance in that movie is Inga. So I'm really, really glad to see her nominated here. I think this would have been my pick, but I think that's more me manifesting just a performance I really, really loved from a film and less about actually trying to rank what was the best performance with any kind of rubric or whatever. Because Teyana Taylor's win here is really, really great and her performance is awesome and just another very worthy winner. And, you know, it's interesting. It's nice going through an awards list where I can be like, yeah, that person deserved to win that award. That's awesome. So very happy for Teyana Taylor to. To win this. I've watched some of the speeches, not all of them, and it seemed like she was, she was really surprised and really, really grateful to have won. And I, I don't think this is the last time we'll be seeing Teyana Taylor give an awards winning speech. So, yeah, really, really happy town. And Taylor, one I would have got with Inga Ips daughter Lilius. This is a weird category in the sense that you have Amy Madigan and weapons, which is a really sensational performance. Obviously worthy of this nomination.
[00:29:40] It wouldn't have surprised me if Amy Madigan won actually, like, the quality of that performance is really good, but Weapons is picking up steam and was really, like, well renowned at the time it came out. But it's a horror film and, you know, those horror films don't always get the nominations they deserve. It's a genre that when it's recognized, it gets recognized, but is often not recognized as much as it should be. Ariana Grande from Wicked for good. I think Ariana Grande's performance is the best performance in. In all of the. The Wicked films. I really, really like her as Glinda and so, you know, this makes sense here. And she's fantastic. Emily Blunt for the Smashing Machine. I haven't actually watched the Smashing Machine, one of the rare misses from this year. I just completely couldn't find a time to watch it when it's in. When it was in cinemas and haven't been able to come back to it. Emily Blunt is always one of those people that every time she gets an award. This happened for Oppenheimer as well, where when Oppenheimer was sleeping, Emily Blunt was getting all these nominations and I was like, oh, I'm not even sure that I performance was, like, specifically amazing. Like, it always feels like a completely fine performance. And so I wonder, someone will have to let me know if this is a weird nominee. I feel like the Emily Blunt noms are always a little weird to me. They never quite feel fully fleshed out. It kind of feels like Emily Blunts around and gave a good enough performance that we can nominate her, but it never feels like she gave, like, a performance equaling the quality of the people who are winning these awards or of the other nominees.
[00:31:04] Not to take away from how talented Emily Blunt is. That's just the way it always feels.
[00:31:08] So, yeah, Tiana Taylor wins. I would have gone with Inga, but happy Teyana Taylor 1. Let's move on. All right, we have best performance by a male actor, musical or comedy. So now we're doing some category split scene here. All right, we are doing some categories. I didn't even realize the best supporting performances weren't split into comedy. And that's so funny or whatever.
[00:31:32] Once we get to the best performance overall and not the supporting ones, we got to split them. Musical or comedy. And then drama is the other category here. Firstly, now's a good time to say, I don't know if I care so much about splitting the musical or comedy away from the drama. And you might be asking, well, why? This is a great way to have more movies.
[00:31:54] More movies kind of showcased More people getting nominated. There's already six nominees in each category instead of five. So even if they were still combined or kind of spreading the love to one more person, etc, etc, it's because there's never any rules about what's a musical or a comedy and what's a drama, and anyone can just pick and choose what they submit to. And I think that's really stupid, and I hate it. I really. If you came here for a rant, I really hate it so much. All right.
[00:32:18] One battle after another is very funny. It is not a comedy. Marty supreme has funny moments. It is not a comedy. Even Blue Moon is like. But it's not a comedy like. Like the. We don't have comedies being made anymore in the same way. But we should reserve this for movies that are trying to be comedies. And I get that the quality of those movies is not as high. The funniest fucking movie this year was Splitsville. Splitsville is not the most amazing movie of this year. Right. But it's the funniest film of the year. So we're trying to figure out what was the funniest shit in a comedy category. It was Splitsville. Right. And so it's really frustrating. If I go up to Drama. Where is Drama here? Oh, it's on the other page. We'll get to Drama when we get to Drama. I just really. If you're gonna split the categories, there needs to be some fucking rules about what goes in which category. So you can't just submit yourself where you think you might win the awards even. I don't know, it just really bothers me. Anyways, rant over. Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon. Very inspired pick. Loved Ethan Hawke and Blue Moon. Very, very good. Ethan Hawke. You know, I think he's got four Oscar noms. He's not exactly someone who gets left out of the award circuit. I don't think he's ever won any of those Oscars, though, so. Really happy to see Ethan Hawke here. One of my faves. Anytime I see Ethan Hawke's name anywhere, I really want to go back and just watch Before Sunrise and Before Sunset over and over and over again until I d just two films that. That just always stick with me. We have George Clooney for J. Kelly, Jesse Plemons for Begonia, Lee Byung Hun for no other choice, Leonardo DiCaprio for one battle After Another, and Timothy Chalamet for Marty Supreme. Now, interestingly enough, I think the George Clooney performance here is the one that's like one of these is not like the others. I think the other five performances are all a little bit better than George Clooney's, but that's okay. Timothy Chalamet wins this award. Second kind of big award of the season. Second time he gets to give a speech. This time it's about his dad taught him to be humble or whatever. So he's been able to leave this ceremony with his head held high when he loses before, but now he's going to win. He's up against Leo. So this is kind of a two horse race here. Him for Marty supreme and Leo for one battle after another are kind of the two people you're, you're going to assume are facing off for the Oscar. Wagner Mora from the Secret Agent, who we'll talk about in a little bit because he's nominated in another category. When these get combined for the Oscar nominations, you'd expect Wagner Mora to be there. But it was really nice. This is where the, this is where it's nice to have the categories split. I just wish the movies, I wish the movies had to submit in the right category or the categories changed to adapt to what's being made separately. Jesse Plemons for Begonia is really, really great and I'm happy he's here. He's probably not going to get a lot of love for the rest of the awards season, so that's wonderful. And Ethan Hawke just gives a really good performance in Blue Moon. Unfortunately for my man Ethan Hawke, I like the Leo and the Timmy performance better than his. So he's not going to be my pick to win. And then Lee being Hun in no other choice is also just sensational. That's such a good role. It's so, so well done and I'm really, really glad to see him here. My pick for this wood. Oh, it's real tough. It's real tough. I have not yet revisited one battle after another for a while and Marty supreme is hot off the presses in my mind. And I love both those movies so much. They were both instant 5 stars on letterbox for me.
[00:35:46] I think my winner is Timothy Chalamet. I think I'm agreeing with this.
[00:35:51] My heart was set on Leo for the longest time. And coming out of Marty supreme, my girlfriend asked me, so what do you think of Timmy? Do you think, do you think Timmy's gonna win it? And I remember being like, I think he might like, I think that might be my favorite performance in this kind of best male actor category. And then I've thought about it and then I've gone a little bit back to Leo over the last. Like, that Leo performance is so fucking good to me. But the Timmy performance is also great. Either way, Timothee Chalamet is a very worthy winner. And it's rare to see male actors on the younger side winning these kinds of awards.
[00:36:25] Obviously won the SAG last year, and that was a big deal. And that speech was really fun. And we were kind of rooting for Timmy. It's interesting that he's gone from his Marty supreme marketing character to a more humble kind. Just Timothee Chalamet kind of. You know, he's kind of playing a different character at these awards shows with these speeches. So I'm happy to see Timmy win. I'm happy he's raking in the awards. This is an actor that absolutely deserves it. His whole filmography is great. When he gets up on stage and says, like, hey, I'm aspiring to great lists, greatness. And then he does interviews saying, you know, the last seven, eight, nine projects, I've really been putting in some of my best work and think I'm putting in some sensational performances. I agree with him. I think this is a man that really does not just talk the talk, but walks the walk. Even in Wonka, I thought he was the best part of that film by far. And so this is a Timmy. Timmy is a person I'm happy is winning these awards.
[00:37:15] Oh, do I agree with this, or would I have gone with Leo? That's really, really hard if I'm, like, an Academy voter. I'm really struggling to pick between these two because I just think they're both really, really sensational this year. But, yeah, Timmy wins. Happy to see some of the other nominees here for this, even though I don't think they ever had a chance of winning. This is the good part of the category split is that I get to say, hey, Jesse Plemons in Begonia was amazing. I'm glad to see him nominated. So, yeah, good for Timmy. Happy to see him win. I'm going to be kind of going back and forth between Leo and Timmy for a while before the Oscars, trying to figure out which performance I like more. I think I just need to revisit one battle. I've seen Marty supreme really recently. I feel like I got a visitor. Revisit one battle. So we'll get to that. For now, though, we'll move on. Best performance by a female actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. You will never guess, but there are some films here that are not fucking funny. Anyways, Amanda or musicals? Amanda Seyfried for the Testament of Ann Lee. That is a musical. So you know what? That's fair enough. Amanda. And honestly, she was great in the housemaid. Her performance in the house made not worthy of any awards, did make me laugh a whole bunch and I appreciated it very much. We have Chase Infinity for one battle after another, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked for Good, Emma Stone for Begonia, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, and Rose Byrne for if I had legs I'd kick you Now. Interestingly enough, I think this is the most slam dunk category in terms of how I feel about it. I think Rose Byrne gives the best performance of this group and I think it is close. Like, saying it's not even close isn't fair to some of the other performances. However, I think Rose Byrne is so obviously my winner in this bunch. Like, it's. It's the award so far, other than golden, maybe like, Golden's another one for best song where I'm like, oh, just stamp that on it. That's like, that's clearly the best one.
[00:39:05] Rose Byrne's performance and if I had legs I kick you is. Is just.
[00:39:11] It's just a sight to behold. It's just incredible.
[00:39:14] That film is hard to get through and it's so anxiety inducing and the camera is so often just like, right on. Rose Byrne like, it. It's like an inescapable performance. She's not getting help from anyone else. You know what I mean? Like, she really is just kicking ass in that film in terms of how good her performance is. Happy to see Kate Hudson here for Song Sung Blue. That feels like a thing the Golden Globes would do. I don't know if that performance is like, that good, but, you know, it's. It's a fun film and that's a fun performance.
[00:39:42] I think the next best performance here is Emma Stone and Begonia and Chase Infinity. I think there's. Rose Byrne is definitely the best performance here, and I'm really glad Rose Byrne picked this up. And then I think Emma Stone and Chase Infinity are kind of behind that just a little bit. And then I think the other nominees are kind of below that. I think there's three tiers to this. I think Rose Byrne for this film is just so great. And it's a smaller film. Like, it's one of those movies where I'm sure you can all relate. If you're listening to a film podcast where you're not aware of every film coming out, you just kind of look at what's in the cinemas, right? And so it's. I remember, like, I, I ended up seeing this film. I didn't even know it existed until I went on to the Cineplex app to book a ticket to go see a movie. I was like, oh, what's playing today? I'd love to go to the movies. It's the thing I do all the time, right. And I saw, you know, if I had legs, like kick you is there. I had no idea what it was about. I was like, I like Rose Byrne. I'll go check this out. And so for, for kind of a smaller. I don't know if it's an indie movie or not, but it kind of feels like it at points where it's like kind of a smaller, lesser known film with just one really great performance can actually not only get nominated in a category deserves to be nominated in, but win in a category I think it deserves to win in. And I think it's not nothing that Rose Byrne is. Is winning against Emma Stone, where who just is. Is kind of like, Emma Stone is just so good, right? And so sensational that and just wins a lot of awards. Like, she's got her two Oscars. She gets nominated for stuff all the time. Like, you have to really. And in this film, in Begonia gives a great performance. So you'd at least have to think about voting against Emma Stone a little bit to get to Rose Byrne. And so I'm really, really glad. Whoever the Hollywood for impressed people are, I think this is a really inspired pick, not only for a nomination, but for a win. So really, really happy for Rose Byrne. I don't think it's gonna. It's gonna take her over the line for the Oscar, but I think it puts her in like the second place position, which is really great.
[00:41:33] I don't know if Chase Infinity. Oh, no, sorry. This is the best female actor. Sorry. I was like, why is Chase Infinity in the supporting actor category? That's my bad. Chase Infinity also sensational. One battle after another, though, just again, a really, really good performance. And now Chase Infinity was in her first film and that. I don't know how you account for that when you're going like, best is best, whether you've been in one film or a million films. But if we're talking like best, best performance and we're kind of calibrating it for how good they should have been, I think Chase Infinity probably wins this because you would not expect that performance from somebody in their first film. But yeah, really happy Roseburn win this. I think it's a really inspired win here and definitely the most deserving win if I'm trying to rank what I think was the best performance. But for now we'll move on. Damn. There are still five awards left. Best performance by a male actor in a motion picture drama. This time we we have Dwayne Johnson for the Smashing Machine. Good for him. Good for Dwayne. Good for the Rock getting a Golden Globe nom. Who'd a thunk? Jeremy Allen White for fucking Springsteen. Deliver Me from Nowhere. Joel Edgerton for Train Dreams, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, Oscar Isaac for Frankenstein and Wagner Mora for the Secret Agent. This is another category that has a different tier going on here. I have Wagner Mora, Michael Jordan and Joel Edgerton in a completely different tier tier than I have Oscar Isaac, Jeremy Ellen White or Dwayne Johnson for this. But that's okay. Wagner Moore picks up the win for the Secret Agent. This is not that unexpected. Wagner Moore is kind of the third player in the that that I think broadly people think could win the Oscar for, for best actor. I think Wagner Moore is obviously sensational, especially the kind of end portion of the movie is where he really like.
[00:43:19] It's where you really get the context for the performance and holy, he really was fantastic in this. So Wagner Moore a very, very worthy winner. Not a surprising winner, but it's always nice when, when international actors and international films win these awards and this is an international voting body. Wagner Moore worthy wither and probably would have been my pick.
[00:43:38] Probably would have been my pick. I think my favorite performance here is Joel Edgerton in Train Dreams. Though I think if I was going with my heart, I picked Joel Edgerton. If I'm going with my head, I'm picking Wagner Mora. Another award though, where I'm like, well, where was Sinners going to win? Because I really like Sinners. And I thought Michael B. Jordan was fantastic and I think I'm putting him third.
[00:43:57] Right. Even if I'm using my head, maybe it's above it because Michael B. Jordan does have to play three people. He has to pay play one twin, the second twin, and then a vampire version of one of the twins. And so he has to play three different people and he does that exceedingly well.
[00:44:13] Either way, he's definitely my second pick.
[00:44:16] He's definitely not my first pick. And so this is another category. I'm like, well, where was Sinners? If it's like insulting that it only won the box office award, where was the other obvious award that it Definitely should have won that. It was like snubbed and I, and I just don't think this is it either because Wagner Moore is fantastic. I think broadly though, Michael B. Jordan here is a great nomination. Very, very deserving, but also just as a body of work. I always like Michael B. Jordan.
[00:44:39] He doesn't have the, the biggest range for me. But when he hits, he's like Christoph Waltz in that sense where it's like, when he hits, it's like, it's like being on some kind of drugs. Like that's how good you feel watching the performance.
[00:44:50] When he misses, he misses a little bit, but that's okay. Really happy. Michael B. Jordan's in the. Joel Edgerton I think was. Was so fucking good in Train Dreams. Train Dreams is my second favorite film of the year and you're not gonna see it nominated for or at least winning very much. So happy to see Joel Edgerton at least here for this in a movie that I really, really loved. So. So yeah, Happy Wagner. More Wagner. Mora1. Let's, let's move on. What's next? Best performance by a female actor in a motion picture drama. Here we go, baby. Eva Victor for Sorry Baby. Huzzah. Jennifer Lawrence for Die My Love. Jessie Buckley for Hamnet. Julia Roberts for After the Hunt. Renate Reinsfer. Yeah, that's, that's how I'm gonna, that's how I'm gonna pronounce it. Reinzver. I don't know how that's correct or not. And Tessa Thompson for Hedda. Sorry. Renate Ranso was for sentimental value. I will admit to not having seen Hedda, so I'm not sure about this Tessa Thompson performance. However, Renate Reinzva, Jesse Buckley, Jennifer Lawrence and Ava Victor all gave performances I really, really loved. Unfortunately for Julia Roberts, I think she's in that tier below the, the people I think would have been worthy winners. However, Jessie Buckley wins for Hamnet. This is absolutely my pick. Jesse Buckley's is one of my favorite or Jesse Buckley is one of my favorite actresses working her performance in Hamnet is just transcendent. It's incredible. It rocks. She just embodies so completely that character and what they're going through and the portrayal of the grief and the loss and then the, the anger and the pain and then that, that last 10 minute sequence in the playhouse is, is just sensational. You can't. It's one of those ones where you watch and you're not even sure how, how the person is summoning that and able to do that. It's like watching Daniel Day Lewis in oh, what was it?
[00:46:47] What's the PTA movie that. I can't think of the name, which is awkward because it's on a podcast. And now I'm getting nervous.
[00:46:54] Oh, my God. Okay, I'm just gonna stall and vamp and pretend like I'm not Googling There Will Be Blood. I did it without Googling.

[00:47:06] Yeah, it's like watching Daniel Day Lewis and There Will Be Blood where you're just like, how is this person even doing this? So, yeah, Jesse Buckley is definitely in a tier of her own as the winner here for me, but I thought Jennifer Lawrence and Die My Love was great with a really weird role, but a really, really great role.
[00:47:22] If we're talking about best movies, I'm not putting Die My Love there, but I think Jennifer Lawrence gives a very worthy performance in a movie that doesn't work quite as well.
[00:47:32] But that performance is best Best actress worthy for sure. Eva Victor is just so sensational in Sorry Baby, both as a writer, a director, and if she had gotten a screenplay nod, a directing nod, and a acting nod, I would not have been surprised. Like, I think she's that good in all three of the jobs she's doing. So really, really happy to see her here. Renate Reinzva in Sentimental Value is so amazing as well.
[00:47:58] The way she portrays her relationship to her father and the, the depression she's going through and, and like how her life has led her to interact in her romantic relationships the way that she does. I just really think Sentimental Value is just such a good watch for, for a really nuanced portrayal of so many things that you'll be able to connect with. But Jesse Buckley is the obvious winner here for me. I think her and Rose Byrne are the two obvious kind of number one and number two spots for the best actress Oscar. And certainly the two performances I put in the number one and two spot, I think they're, they're kind of on a, on a clash here. It's like, it's like the best actor race with Leo and Timmy to some degree. Although I think. I don't think anything stopping Jesse Buckley if it's going to be Rose Byrne. I mean, hey, I'm not going to, I'm not going to say that Rose Byrne didn't give a worthy performance over Jesse Buckley. My pick is obviously here with Amnet and Jesse Buckley, but really, really great category. Really, like, good performances here. Like, I think Jesse Buckley, Jayla, Eva Victor And Renate Reinzva as like, the four performances here I think are really great. I'll give four very different performances, which is also very cool. Like if you're looking at this list and going and watching the films because you didn't catch them and they were nominated for awards and this is a great list. But yeah, Jesse Buckley for Hamnet. Great winner. We are moving on to best Motion Picture in the non English language. I said in the non English language. As if there's two languages English and then the non English one. However, it could be any language that's not English. It was Just an Accident. Was submitted by France. No Other Choice from South Korea, Sentimental Value from Norway, Seurat from Spain, the Secret Agent for Brazil and the Voice of Hindra Job from Tunisia. I'm not gonna lie, this is a harder category for me to catch. All the films. The Voice of Hindra Job in Seurat I've not been to catch yet, so I can't comment on those I have been able to see. It was just an accident. No other choice. Sentimental Value in the Secret Agent though the Secret Agent wins here for Brazil. This was the obvious winner. I'm not sure it's my pick. I think my pick here might be no other choice. I think. I think the Secret Agent is incredible and very successful and obviously a worthy winner. It's just one of those films where when I Same with Sentimental Value, actually when I compare how much I liked it compared to the top level of those people who really loved it, I'm not quite there.
[00:50:22] I think no Other Choice just has this. This premise and this mode of storytelling and it's just this way of having a cultural commentary on. On a current issue that kind of really sticks with me more. I have a.
[00:50:38] I don't know what it is about Korean film and Korean cinema. I just have a predisposition to really liking the style insofar as there is a consistent style or consistent framing or consistent experience when you're watching Korean films. And I just think no other Choice was the one that stood out. That was the one where I walked out of the theater and liked it the most. Was like, oh my God, that was incredible.
[00:51:02] That was amazing. Sentimental value. And it was. It was just an accident. Also very worthy winners here. I loved both of those films as well. Really?
[00:51:11] All four of the films I've seen. Any of them could have won. I'd be like, yeah, that makes sense. And I'm assuming Seurat and the Voice of Hyndra Job are also great. I'll definitely catch before the Oscars. They're both kind of on my list. So. Yeah, Secret Agent wins here. Great winner. Could have been any of the other three choices from the films I watched though, and I would have been happy. I probably would have picked no other choice. But hey, you know, I'm not. I'm not voting on these awards. But good for Wagner Moore. Good for the Secret Agent. Great to get some recognition for everyone else who made that movie. Because for the rest of it, I think a lot of it's going to be Wagner Mora winning the awards for the film, if anyone's going to win. So I'm really, really nice for the chance of the. The people from. And Brazil has a really strong voting contingent in places, man. Like, they know how to get their movies voted for. What was the film last year? I can't remember what it was. There's a film last year and it was the best actress nomination as well last year from a Brazilian film. So they had to work their way around an awards ceremony. Next up, we have Best Motion Picture Animated. Arco. Oh, sorry, that's so funny. Arco is a nominee. It says underneath it 2026 nominee. Because it's not from a movie. It just says what year that.
[00:52:14] Because it's the name of the. Anyways with the actors. It gives me the actor and then the. The film they were in for the films. Okay. Anyways, Arco is a 2026 nominee. Demon Slayer, Infinity Castle, Elio, K Pop, Demon Hunters, Little Amelie and the character of Rain and Zootopia 2. Now, for this category, I'm going to struggle because I just have not watched most of these films. I didn't see Arco or Elio. I just missed them. Whatever. Demon Slayer I didn't watch because I wasn't sure how approachable. It was obviously a huge hit. It was in the cinemas forever. And I just don't know anything about Demon Slayer. I didn't know how approachable it was. I didn't want to like go in and then not like it. Not because it wasn't good, but just because I didn't understand Demon Slayer. So I didn't want to. I didn't want to do that. And I probably should have watched it. The only two I've watched here are K Pop, Demon Hunters and Zootopia 2. The good news is I am going to be able to watch Little Amelie and the character of Rain really shortly. So I'm assuming that that's really great. I've heard really fantastic things about it. K Pop Demon Hunters is my pick here. I think what's interesting is this is kind of.
[00:53:15] This is where I wish there the best cinematic because I, I have a funny feeling that once I watch Little Amelie in the character of Rain.
[00:53:26] Amelie. I don't even know how to say that anyways, that that's gonna be the best one. Like if I'm. If I'm just trying to figure out what the best film is. K Pop Demon Hunters is a transcendent film. It's a culturally important film. It's kind of, you know, it's in the zeitgeist. It's one of the, maybe one of the few monoculture things from this year. And so I don't know if it's the best film though, but it's definitely better than Zootopia 2, so that's positive here. But K Pop Demon Hunters being awarded here is fantastic. Really happy for K Pop Demon Hunters. That's a film that, you know, I'm assuming that once I watch the Lamoli or the character of Rain that I will change my mind. But at least for now, K Pop Demon Hunters would have been my pick for the winner here. But I just don't have enough, you know, experience with these films to really have an opinion. So we'll, we'll move on to Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. Now, aside from the fact of the categories and all the stuff we've already talked about, your nominees here are Blue Moon, Begonia, Marty supreme, no other choice, Nouvelle Vogue, and One Battle After Another.
[00:54:26] Now I want to start with the Richard Linklater of it all. Nouvelle Vogue, Blue Moon, both nominated here. Really, really happy. I think if any, if any of these are going to get a nomination at the Oscars, I'd be very surprised. And I love Richard Linklater. I think both these films are good. I don't think either of them are very, like, fantastic. And so I think this is the right amount of awarding for them. I think this is the right recognition to have two nominations, one each in. In the Golden Globes where there's a category split. So I think that's fine. I think Begonia, Marty supreme, no other choice and one battle after another are the four best films here, of which I put Begonia possibly in a tier just a little bit below the other three.
[00:55:06] My pick here and my favorite film of the year overall is One Battle after Another. I. I just think this film is, is just so transcendent and so just right up my alley. It combines all of the things I want in A film and all of my interest into kind of one perfect, you know, three hour experience.
[00:55:26] So it was always going to be one battle after another for me. I do want to shout out though, I really, really liked Begonia. I didn't love Begonia, but I think Begonia is a really great, great film with some great performances, a great message, or at least a really fun message, a really interesting premise. I'm really here for Begonia. I really, I really think that film is great. Marty supreme and no Other Choice are just sensationally done. Those are two films that I love so much and I just. If you had told me right now I'm going to the cinema and I have to sit down and back to, back to back, I have to watch no Other Choice, Marty supreme in one battle after another in a random order, I'd be like, you know what? I'll be here from noon to midnight, baby. That's going to be a great day for me, no matter what we do. So really, really happy with this selection. Really happy with the, the recognition films are getting here and that are probably not going to get recognized anywhere else. And I think One Battle After Another is the deserving winner here and would have been my pick as well. And finally we have Best Motion Picture Drama. We have Frankenstein.
[00:56:25] Frankenstein. Jesus Christ. Anyways, moving on from Frankenstein, Hamnet. It was just an accident. Sentimental Value, Sinners, the Secret Agent. All movies that are way better than Frankenstein. Now Hamnet is the winner here and this is the big surprise. And I'm assuming this is where the Sinner's Heads are a little bit sad that they didn't win. I'm gonna say that my pick here. Oh, what would my pick have been?
[00:56:50] I think my pick here is Hamnet.
[00:56:55] You know what? Maybe the Sinner's Heads have Best Motion Picture Drama.
[00:57:03] Bro, this is tough.
[00:57:06] This is really, really hard. It's possible I should have thought about this a little more before hopping on the pod, but me talking about in real time might also be interesting. Anyways, Hamnet is the winner here and I think Hamnet's a very deserving winner here. So either way, if you're, if you're one of the Sinner's heads who are kind of upset, you did not get snubbed here, Ham. It's a very, very great film and very worthy of winning this award. And yes, I think if the, the, if Sinners was going to pick up another award, kind of top of the line, big star studded, showy award, I think this was its best chance.
[00:57:38] But I think Hamnet's a very worthy winner, and not surprising, Hamnet was the favorite. Going in to the award ceremony for a while, it seems like it. Maybe it wasn't. Maybe Sinners was. Maybe I just missed this whole thing because for a while it seemed like Hamnet and one battle after another were gonna be the. The.
[00:57:53] Well, what's another good example? It kind of feels like possibly what's a good example of a race?
[00:58:01] Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love, Maybe when they were competing against each other, that might feel right. There's. There's a few like it where there's just kind of two different films. It's more about not the quality of the film, but which. Which kind. Which type of film are people gonna go for now? I think One Battle after another is a better movie than Hamnet, if. If not marginally so. However, I'm really happy to see Hamnet win here. I think everyone that works on Hamnet is very, very deserving of this award. But really, anyone but Frankenstein could have won, and I'd be happy, right? Like, it was just an accident. Sentimental value. Sinners and the Secret Agent are all fantastic films. They're all very worthy. They're all very deserving. This is just a really good slate of movies. And if you're. If you're just going to. If you're. If you're going to go through the best picture categories here and watch the films, out of the 12 nominees, 11 of them are definitely worth watching. There's definitely a tier. You know, I have my one tier of movies above the other. The only movie I don't think is nearly as good as all the others is Frankenstein. And as much as I don't like that movie, it's very watchable and, like, enjoyable. You can put it on Netflix and have a good time for two hours. Like, it's not. You're not gonna regret that you watched it. And so really, really happy to see Hamnet win here. It does. It does kind of set up the Hamnet. One battle after another, showdown for the Oscars. Even though I think nothing is gonna stop one battle after. I feel like it's a fake showdown, but a showdown nonetheless. And really, really happy to see the other movies nominated. I just think that this is the end for Sinners. Like, I think maybe that's part of it too, is now you kind of realize, okay, well, if Sinners was gonna win any awards, it's usually the Golden Globes, where movies like this can. Can do some surprising things.
[00:59:39] So, yeah, I get it. If you're a Sinners fan and you wanted more than the two awards you got, then this was disappointing. And especially because Hamnet's a very different film. So it's likely that if you really love Sinners or the Secret Agent, then Hamnet is probably not not. It's likely you might have also loved Hamnet, but it's also likely we're like, well, Hamnet's maybe not my cup of tea, but yeah, really happy Hamnet1 here. I think I was very, very, very good, worthy and deserving win and I think it sets up an interesting showdown for the other award ceremonies as we head towards the Oscars. Oscars. I think that's it though for the Golden Globes. Those were all the awards that were on their website, so if I missed any, you can blame the Golden Globes. It's going to be a very interesting award season. Next time I'll come better prepared with takes. Like I'll go into the other award ceremonies with some takes. Maybe we can, we can do another award season review once the dga, pga, baftas kind of before the Oscars. But after all the other award ceremonies, I think it would be an interesting time to jump back in.
